Health Benefits of Essential Oils

Have you been hearing a lot lately about essential oils? Maybe you keep seeing posts on social media about the health benefits of essential oils. I know that was me a couple of months ago and I feel ready to share one of my secrets I’ve been keeping.

At the beginning of the summer I was suffering from a great deal of anxiety, my normal workout routine wasn’t helping and I wasn’t sleeping much either. It’s not like me to make a bunch of excuses, although I had a lot going on I just wanted to find a solution.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are aromatic, concentrated plant extracts that are harvested from farm-grown and wildcrafted plants, herbs, and trees. They are carefully obtained through steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. These pure essential oils are more potent than dried herbs and far more powerful than the botanicals from which they are extracted.

Essential oils are stored in small, glandular like sacs found on the plant’s surface or the inside of the plant material. For example, the lavender oil sac is found on the surface of the lavender petal, while citrus essential oils are found on the inside of the fruit’s peel.

Essential oils can be used for aromatherapy, personal care, or household solutions, and really every aspect of daily life can benefit from them!
Some key things to remember:

1. volatile liquids and natural compounds found in shrubs, flowers, trees, bushes
2. carefully obtained through distillation or cold pressing
3. each essential oil contains hundreds of different constituents
4. highly concentrated and potent

What makes them special?

They are incredibly potent, 100-10,000 times more concentrated than herbs. These oils quickly change from liquid to gas and there are endless ways to use oils. For example, it takes 75 lemons to make one 15ml bottle of lemon essential oil and over 5,000 pounds of rose petals to make 1 pound of pure rose essential oil! Young Living uses 27 square feet of lavender plants to make one 15ml bottle of lavender oil. Lavender has become one of my absolute favorite oils to use, especially at night.

Historically Speaking

Essential oils are not new although they may have only recently been creeping on your instagram feed. Different cultures have been using them for years for a variety of benefits, from cosmetic, to dietary, to spiritual. Ancient Egypt, Chinese, Indian, are just a few of the cultures to have used essential oils throughout the years.

Young Living Essential Oils

I’ve learned that Young Living extracts lemon, grapefruit, lime, and orange by cold pressing. They use this process for obtaining citrus oils because using other methods can break down and damage the delicate citral molecules. Fatty oils such as olive, almond, and coconut oil are also cold-pressed from the plant.

So Lauren that’s great but how do I use them and what are the benfits?

There are 3 ways you can get the health benefits of essential oils. You can use them aromatically in a diffuser, topically on your skin, or internally.

Some way you can use them AROMATICALLY:

1. Use a diffuser to enhance any environment or space!
2. Add a couple of drops of essential oils to your bath.
3. Put a few drops of essential oils in your palms and cover your nose while taking a few deep breaths.
4. Combine your favorite essential oils with water and witch hazel to make a linen spray.
5. Use essential oils on wool dryer balls to freshen your laundry.

The sense of smell is connected to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. Did you know that a scent can evoke an emotion before we are consciously aware of it?

For me I was able to start calming my anxiety with lavender, I would put 3-5 drops in my hand, rub them together, and then cup my nose to take a few deep breaths. Instantly I felt calmer, and I knew then that there was more to this essential oil thing than I realized.

Then I tried this same tactic with my peppermint oil, this time I felt different, more energized! Here are some lists of oils and there benefits.

5 Oils with Calming Benefits

1. Clary Sage: woody, herbal, coniferous, healthy hair, and scalp calming to the skin
2. Rosemary: helps reduce tension and fatigue
3. Chamomile: floral, sweet, soothing, supports the immune system
4. Rose: floral, dry, sweet, uplifting, balances moisture levels in the skin
